         Understanding DNS and How It Powers the Internet:             Insights from My Time at Wix

As someone with a deep understanding of the Domain Name System (DNS) and its vital role in the digital world, I've had the privilege of working with cutting-edge technologies during my career. Recently, I spent six months at Wix, a leading website-building platform, where I applied my knowledge of DNS to ensure seamless user experiences and site performance. In this post, I'll take you through the basics of how DNS works and share some insights from my time at Wix 

What is DNS and Why is it Important?

The Domain Name System (DNS) is often described as the "phonebook of the internet." It's a system that translates user-friendly domain names like "www.example.com" into IP addresses that computers can use to communicate with each other. Without DNS, we'd all need to memorize long, complex strings of numbers just to visit a website!

 

How DNS Works:

1. The Basic ProcessThe Query: When you type a website address in your browser, your device sends a query to a DNS resolver to find the IP address associated with that domain name.

2. Root Servers: The resolver first checks the root servers, which contain information on top-level domains (TLDs), like .com or .org.

3. TLD Servers: Next, the resolver contacts the TLD server for the specific domain (e.g., for "example.com," the resolver asks the .com TLD server).

 

4. Authoritative Servers: Finally, the resolver reaches the authoritative DNS server for the domain, which provides the exact IP address.

 

5. Connecting to the Website: With the IP address in hand, your browser can now connect to the server hosting the website.My Experience at Wix: A Glimpse Into the DNS World

 

During my time at Wix, I was able to see firsthand how DNS plays a critical role in the smooth functioning of websites. Wix’s platform simplifies website creation and management, and a big part of that is ensuring DNS is configured correctly for users who want to connect custom domains to their sites.

Working on DNS-related issues at Wix involved:

  • Configuring and troubleshooting DNS settings for domains purchased via Wix.

  • Managing DNS records such as A, CNAME, MX, and TXT records to ensure proper routing of website traffic and email services.

  • Optimizing DNS performance, ensuring faster website load times by implementing DNS caching and routing techniques.

  • Helping users understand how DNS works and troubleshooting common DNS-related issues to maintain seamless service.
